The Hughes JUPITER™ System gateways are designed to operate on a powerful blade platform and leverage the latest in data center technologies to ensure maximum scalability. The power of the platform enables a complete Satellite Modem Cluster (SMC) to be configured as a single blade server mated with a modulator and demodulator. One SMC, occupying two slots in a blade chassis, is able to support all of the forward traffic of an outroute and all the return traffic from multiple inroutes.

The HG220 broadband gateway configuration is designed and optimized for conventional satellites that use 36 or 72 MHz transponders. The HG220 gateway comes with a single blade chassis that can support up to five SMCs. An integrated L-band matrix switch enables a redundant SMC to come online to take the place of the primary SMC, allowing the HG220 to support 1:N redundancy. The Hughes-developed L-band matrix can connect the SMCs to different transponders or satellites.

The HG220 gateway is highly scalable in that it enables an operator to start with a single network with an outroute as small as 5 Msps and scale to grow to as many as five networks, each supporting an outroute as large as 70 Msps. Each network can support as much as 48 Msps of return channel traffic as well as up to 250 Mbps of IP processing. The HG220 also performs traffic optimization when used for 4G/LTE cell site backhaul.

The HG220 comes equipped with integrated IF distribution, timing system, NMS with firewall, Gigabit LAN switch, and intelligent power distribution. All components are 1:N redundant with automatic fault detection and switchover.
