DIR-TELE-CTSA-007

Distributed organizations face unique challenges when it comes to their networks, especially for those incorporating broadband. Agency sites can have vastly different broadband access types and infrastructures, which can wreak havoc on overall network performance while increasing management complexity. Adding Cloud-based applications to the mix compounds the problem.

The Software-Defined Wide Area Network, or SD-WAN, is the next-generation solution to solve these problems. As a trusted technology and managed services leader, Hughes is well-positioned to deliver on the promise of SD-WAN.

HUGHES MANAGED SD-WAN SERVICE

Hughes Managed SD-WAN is a carrier-agnostic solution with nationwide coverage leveraging wireline, wireless, and satellite transports. Designed especially for highly distributed organizations, Hughes Managed SD-WAN is the leader in Distributed SD-WAN. Our SD-WAN solutions are typically deployed with a single location device integrating broadband optimization, multipath traffic steering, routing, and security functions to minimize complexity and cost.  Hughes partners with vetted and proven industry leaders, such as Fortinet, Cisco/Meraki, and VMware/VeloCloud, to offer a vendor-agnostic SD-WAN solution. Hughes SD-WAN offerings include:

  • Bandwidth monitoring, which helps configure SD-WAN SLAs and rules to balance SD-WAN traffic.
  • QoS, which characterizes broadband connections based on bandwidth and latency.
  • Packet loss and application prioritization, which identifies and prioritizes individual applications based on customer requirements or their traffic behavior.
  • Broadband aggregation, which makes the best use of the entire available capacity to maximize application performance by enabling the use of a secondary connection while the primary is active (instead of having a secondary service payment that is only used sporadically).
  • Intelligent routing, which enables branch data to be directly and securely routed as close to the destination as possible without the need to travel through a centralized location, removing the need for an MPLS service and reducing data center congestion.
  • Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP), which empowers organizations to add new sites quickly and provides end‑to‑end visibility (from the data center through the Cloud to the edge), enabling rapid and proactive problem resolution. ZTP allows for sites that do not have dedicated technical teams to be brought online without needing them to configure the edges.

DATA SERVICES

Hughes maintains direct relationships with all the major telecommunication, cable, fiber, and wireless providers, managed together with its own satellite network services. These extensive relationships, combined with its ability to successfully integrate every broadband transport into an efficient and serviceable network architecture capable of supporting networks of 10,000+ sites, ensures the customer’s operational success with the greatest possible coverage and bandwidth at the lowest possible cost.

Wireline:  Hughes offers multiple broadband technology options (Ethernet, DSL, cable, fiber, and DS1) for every Texas DIR Agency Customer location whether it is in or out of state.  Each agency location is prequalified to determine the access type(s) and speeds that are available.  Hughes will work with each individual agency to determine the best possible access type and speed to design a network to meet the agency requirements.

Cellular Wireless Service: include fourth-generation “4G” LTE wireless services from multiple wireless providers. At each customer location, Hughes will supply an LTE-capable wireless access device that provides an over-the-air interface through an integrated wireless modem and an Ethernet port interface that connects to the Hughes-provided equipment.

The customer may elect to use Wireless WAN services for primary, secondary, or backup connectivity. Hughes offers a variety of cellular service subscription plans and includes pooled plans. The cross‑plan pooling is a key differentiator in Hughes’ wireless service offering. In this industry-leading offering, for all customer locations that have Hughes’ wireless access service, Hughes will create a cross-plan pooled usage allowance for the locations regardless of the configuration (circuit designation or service plan). In this regime, primary, secondary, and backup service plans are aggregated across all of the customer’s locations to create a single usage allowance capacity pool. Cross-plan pooling is not available for individual sites.

Fixed Wireless Service: is a line-of-sight-based service. At each location receiving fixed wireless service, Hughes will install a fixed wireless antenna along with local transport layer termination equipment. This equipment establishes a layer 3 connection to the Internet over a point-to-point microwave link to the nearest POP. This service is available in a variety of speeds. The actual available speed will depend upon the distance of the POP from the customer location.

Satellite Service: Hughes provides multiple Satellite Access Service solutions. Hughes will design the appropriate mix of satellite technologies based on the customer’s network needs. Each of the technologies requires a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) to be installed at the customer’s Location. The VSAT establishes a connection to the Internet through a Hughes Satellite point of presence (POP).

Satellite Broadband Access operates over Ku‑band or Ka-band spectrum. Ku‑band Satellite Services traditionally operate in a VSAT-to-hub communication architecture where all remotes communicate with a hub located at an HNS NOC or POP.

HUGHES PORTAL

Hughes will provide a network performance portal to allow DIR and the Customer to view network performance for dedicated network customers. Hughes provides a comprehensive network management solution for enterprise and government networks. The Hughes Portal will provide Customers with real-time, online status reporting on satellite, terrestrial, and wireless implementations. The Hughes Portal enables Customers to receive customer-specific network performance and fault management reports. The Hughes Portal is a Web-based application created and maintained by Hughes. Hughes will provide an online training session to network support personnel on how to access and use the Hughes Portal.

SATELLITE BUSINESS INTERNET (SOHO)

Hughes Satellite Business Internet plans provide high availability, high-speed, always-on connections that give the Customer instant access to the Internet. Hughes has developed a robust suite of new Internet access plans specifically tailored to business and government agencies. With its advanced satellite technology, the Hughes service delivers a reliable broadband connection around the clock. And since Hughes delivers high-speed Internet over satellite, the user can work online and have their phone or fax line available. Hughes utilizes two-way satellite technology to link users’ computers to the Internet. A certified HughesNet installer will connect the user’s computer to the satellite modem and link it to the satellite antenna that is typically mounted on the roof of the home or small office. The satellite antenna sends and receives information (for example; email, point-of-sale, Web pages, files) over the Internet and delivers it to user’s computer almost instantly. There are seven Hughes Business Internet plans to choose from, depending upon the user’s business needs, with download speeds up to 25 Mbps.

HughesNet Voice (optional for SOHO users) uses advanced Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to deliver a feature-rich phone service over your satellite connection. HughesNet Voice is optimized to work over a satellite connection, so it does not interfere with Internet use or affect service plan data. HughesNet Voice comes with a number of useful standard features, including call waiting, caller ID, outbound caller ID, call forwarding, call block, simultaneous ring, enhanced voicemail (accessible via dial‑in and forwarded via email), and a Web-based self-care portal.  Also included in HughesNet Voice is unlimited local and long-distance calling in the continental US and Canada.

BROADBAND GLOBAL AREA NETWORK (BGAN)

Hughes—a leader in L‑ and S‑band Mobile Satellite System (MSS) communications—designs and manufactures an array of lightweight portable, fixed, and vehicular mobile satellite terminals, ranging from commercial to military grade. Approximately 500,000 user terminals, on land and at sea, have been delivered based on Hughes innovative MSS technologies. Hughes designs and manufactures systems for operators such as Inmarsat, THURAYA, Globalstar, Ligado, Terrestar Solutions, EML and MEXSAT.
